No Plants After Bone Marrow Transplant, Here's Why

Writer: Half Holistic LivingHalf Holistic Living

As a person who has a family member about to undergo a bone marrow transplant, life has been a rollercoaster, and at the same time I have been learning a lot about recovery from said bone marrow transplant, life after transplant, so to speak.

I shared on a social media story recently that I had taken in some plants to care for, as after this specific type of transplant, patients should not handle any plants or flowers for 100 days following their day 0.

So, what does this mean? well, it doesn't simply mean hands off, do not touch. It means any plants or flowers should be completely removed from your bedroom or any other space in your home where you spend a significant amount of time. If you can find someone to plant sit for you, that would be ideal.

While recovering from bone marrow transplant patients should not be watering plants or flowers, the reason behind this, is that within the soil, there can be fungus, bacteria, and mold spores that may lead to infection in immunocompromised individuals. Patients should also not be doing yard work within their first 100 days of recovery from a bone marrow transplant, no mowing the lawn, weeding, or raking leaves. Even dried flower or silk flower arrangements may need to be removed, especially those containing dried mosses as a base.

This is meant for educational purposes only, if you are going through a BMT please refer to your professional medical team for your specific care and treatment plan.
